Don't hire direct from classified advertisements!

1. Scare stories of direct-hired nannies from classified ads on places like Gumtree  range from cruelty to ID theft to complete lack of experience. The importance of incredibly thorough verbal and written nanny reference checking is critical - nanny agencies do this day in day out and know how subtle a bad reference can be - similarly we know how to spot forged ID and/or qualifications documents.

2. Only a nanny agency may check a candidate's CRB record - for example how are you going to do a CRB check on the individual you may want to hire (In the UK, ONLY companies like The London Nanny Agency have access to the CRB)

3. We only take around 10% of applicant nannies onto our books (based on great track-record, qualifications, CRB, residency rights, references and ability). There are thousands of poor nannies out there on the classifieds that have been rejected by the agencies. If you do try and to hire direct from classifieds there are several major pitfalls - and the chances of interviewing an adequate nanny are less than 1 in 10 - and even if you find one that seems OK, how will you CRB, ID and reference check her? (see 2 above.)
